In the term of the veneer used.

Hardwood plywood

The plywood that is manufactured by bonding together veneers from hardwood.

Softwood plywood

The use of veneers of softwoods or softwood chips that are glued together that are then heat pressed in the manufacturing of softwood plywood.

In the term of the number of plies

A number of plies refer to the layers of veneers or thin slices of wood that is used in the manufacturing of the plywood.  Based on the number of plies you have

• 3-ply
• 5-ply
• 7-ply
• 9-ply

Reminder: The plywood tends to be expensive as the number of ply increases.

In the term of Properties

Based on the properties of the plywood you have.

MR- Moisture resistant plywood that is resistant moisture, humidity, and dampness to some extent.

BWR- This refers to Boiling waterproof property of the plywood.

In the term of Sizes

The standard dimension of plywood is 4 feet by 8 feet. You may have hardwood plywood in less than standard size measuring about 2X2, 2X4 AND 4X4 feet.  There is also the utility grade plywood that is longer than usual commercial plywood sizes and is about 4X10 foot.
